... let us instead turn our attention to one of the companies that Baby Boomers run!  Monsanto!  Here's a piece off of the Ethicurean which is Made. Of. Awesome.  See bottom of article for attribution.

What is money?

no! it's fucked!
Have you ever wondered what money actually is?  No?  I hadn't really either.  I mean, if I ask the question "Where does money come from?" what do you think?

......

Did you think of the U.S. Mint?  Yeah, so did I, even though I already knew that it was wrong.  I tried to conjure up some ideas of Government, and I knew that banks had something to do with it, but that's as close as I got.

And ooooh, dear lord.  The truth is... it's... stunning.  Just stunning.  You don't have any idea--really--unless maybe you're a grad student in monetary theory (and even then, it's only maybe).

So now I'm begging everyone to go and watch this video:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9050474362583451279

This is a film about how our actual monetary system works.  It's clear, it's understandable, and it's really quite stunning.  As the film points out, none of us learned about any of this in school.  In fact, it's pretty obvious that the system is so appallingly unsustainable that it's in our economy's best interest if no one understands it.

The film is about 50 minutes long, so it will take some time to watch, but I'm really serious--please do watch this if you possibly can.  Understanding the way our monetary system works is the only way we will ever understand what's really happening to our economy, and certainly the only way we will ever be in a position to fix it (if this is even possible).  The film does get a touch "conspiracy theory-y" by the end, but the overall worth of the film is excellent.  I hope everyone will watch this, and pass it along.

The best quotation I've ever read.

the truth
This just so suits my personal sensibilities.  It's possible that this fact says more about me than I care for others to know, but hey, it's the blogosphere, right?  The quotation is from Maria Mies from The Subsistence Perspective (requoted by Sharon Astyk at casaubonsbook.blogspot.com):

"...those prominent male scientists who, at the end of their lives, are horrified when they look at themselves and their works, and when they realise that the God to whom they have devoted their whole life - scientific progress - is a Moloch who eats his children. Some of these men then convert from a Saul to a Paul. But they rarely give up the whole megalomania of the project of modern science. If they can't solve humanity's problems by almighty science and technology then at at least the catastrophe has to be total and all-encompassing. Note even a single blade of grass is allowed to grow on the ruins of their deeds." (Mies, 25-26)

Yeah....
